How the free CRCST practice test works

Coverage across seven domains

The practice test samples every study domain so the report can compare where your current practice scores are stronger or lower.

A next study action

The report neutrally calls out your relatively lowest-scoring domain without predicting whether you will pass the exam.

Original questions

No actual, recalled, or leaked HSPA exam questions. Paid practice uses explanations to teach the concepts behind unfamiliar wording.

Original CRCST-style sample questions

These examples were written for this page and are never placed in the practice test, practice, review, or mock bank. They are not actual, recalled, or leaked HSPA exam questions. Use each explanation to check the reasoning, then follow the linked primary source and your facility's current procedures where applicable.

Question 1 · Cleaning, decontamination, and disinfection

A technician receives an unfamiliar reusable device. What should guide the cleaning method before processing begins?

  1. The method used for the most similar-looking device
  2. The current manufacturer instructions for use— correct
  3. The fastest cycle available in the department
  4. The preference of the person who transported it

Explanation:Reusable devices should be reprocessed according to the current manufacturer instructions for use. Appearance alone does not establish compatible chemistry, equipment, disassembly, or cycle requirements. When instructions are missing or unclear, stop and use the facility's escalation process instead of guessing.

Question 2 · Cleaning, decontamination, and disinfection

Why is thorough cleaning required before a device can be disinfected or sterilized?

  1. Cleaning changes every device into a single-use item
  2. Cleaning guarantees that packaging will remain dry
  3. Remaining soil can interfere with the later process— correct
  4. Cleaning replaces the need to follow the device instructions

Explanation:Cleaning removes soil and other material that can interfere with disinfection or sterilization. It is an essential preceding step, not a replacement for the level of processing required by the device and its intended use.

Question 3 · Sterilization processes

What does a chemical indicator on or inside a package primarily show?

  1. That the item was exposed to one or more process conditions— correct
  2. That every microorganism on the item was destroyed
  3. That the device is approved for every sterilization method
  4. That the package may be stored for an unlimited time

Explanation:A chemical indicator responds to specified process conditions. It does not by itself prove sterility or replace physical monitoring, biological monitoring when required, package inspection, load review, or the facility's release procedure.

Question 4 · Department considerations

A worker expects contact with blood or other potentially infectious material. What should determine the protective equipment used?

  1. How quickly the task can be completed
  2. Whether the worker has handled the item before
  3. The worker's personal preference for comfort
  4. The anticipated exposure and the employer's exposure-control procedure— correct

Explanation:Protection should match the reasonably anticipated exposure and the employer's bloodborne-pathogens controls. Familiarity with a task does not remove the hazard, and personal protective equipment should not be reduced merely to save time.

Question 5 · Preparation and packaging

During assembly, the count sheet and the instruments present do not agree. What is the best next action?

  1. Guess which item name was intended and finish the set
  2. Stop and follow the department's discrepancy and escalation process— correct
  3. Remove the count sheet so the mismatch is not visible
  4. Substitute any instrument that fits in the empty position

Explanation:A discrepancy should be resolved through the approved process rather than hidden or guessed at. The exact escalation path is facility-specific, but accurate assembly and documentation require the technician to stop and obtain clarification when the available evidence does not match.
