Credential comparison
CRCST vs. CBSPD CSPDT: compare the rules before you choose
CRCST and CSPDT are separate technician credentials from separate organizations. A useful comparison starts with current primary sources and the employers you hope to work for, not with a prep company's claim that one option wins everywhere.

What is the difference between CRCST and CSPDT?
HSPA issues the Certified Registered Central Service Technician credential, abbreviated CRCST. The Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution issues the Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician credential, abbreviated CSPDT. They cover related technician work, but they are not interchangeable names for one program. Each organization owns its application, eligibility, exam, records, code of conduct, and renewal process.

The safest way to compare them is to open the current HSPA CRCST page and the current CBSPD technician page side by side. Ignore old blog tables when they conflict with an official page. Fees, testing vendors, application windows, and renewal details can change. This page gives a dated orientation, then sends you back to the issuers for the controlling terms.
Neither credential is awarded by CRCST Academy. Our questions are original study material and are not official items from either exam. A preparation purchase does not register you for HSPA or CBSPD, document work experience, schedule a test, or create a credential record. Those actions stay with the certifying body.

Who issues CRCST and CSPDT, and what do the titles mean?
HSPA describes CRCST as its introductory sterile processing certification. HSPA's public materials connect the credential with decontamination, inspection, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, and distribution responsibilities. The CRCST process includes the 400-hour hands-on rule. HSPA's current page distinguishes full CRCST status from provisional status when acceptable experience documentation is still outstanding.
CBSPD calls its technician credential CSPDT and describes the exam as entry-level testing for minimum competency in sterile processing functions. Its technician page currently lists several ways to satisfy eligibility, such as specified work experience, a qualifying training course, or certain related experience. Because the exact alternatives and evidence rules belong to CBSPD, read the current bulletin rather than assuming a course title or job description qualifies.
The acronyms can look similar in a job post, so read carefully. CRCST refers to HSPA's credential. CSPDT refers to CBSPD's. A generic phrase such as certified sterile processing technician may not tell you which one an employer means. When the posting is unclear, ask the recruiter or department which issuer and credential are acceptable.

- Inspection
- Assembly

- Sterilization

- Distribution
Check which credential a posting means
Generic wording may not say which one the employer means. Ask the recruiter or department which issuer they accept.
How do CRCST and CSPDT eligibility paths compare?
CRCST has a 400-hour hands-on rule. HSPA currently provides a provisional route for candidates who pass the exam before HSPA receives acceptable documentation of those hours, subject to HSPA's deadline and conditions. That structure can separate the exam milestone from final full certification, but it does not erase the experience requirement. Only HSPA can confirm whether a particular role, task mix, supervisor, or form satisfies its rule.
CRCST hands-on rule400 hours
If you pass before HSPA receives acceptable documentation of your hours, it currently offers a provisional route, subject to its deadline and conditions. The hours are still required.
CBSPD currently publishes multiple eligibility routes for the CSPDT examination. Its technician page describes routes based on sterile processing employment, a combination of related allied-health and sterile processing experience, a qualifying technician training course, or healthcare product sales or service related to the profession. Those summaries have details, verification requirements, and deadlines. Use the candidate bulletin that applies to your testing window.
This difference matters if you are choosing a first step. Make an evidence list for each path: employment dates, hours, course certificate, supervisor signature, or other documents. Then ask each issuer any narrow questions before paying. A school salesperson or social-media group cannot make a binding eligibility decision for HSPA or CBSPD.
CSPDT routes CBSPD describes
- Sterile processing employment
- A combination of related allied-health and sterile processing experience
- A qualifying technician training course
- Healthcare product sales or service related to the profession
Only the issuer decides eligibility
List your evidence for each path and ask each issuer before you pay. A school salesperson or social-media group cannot decide for HSPA or CBSPD.
How do the CRCST and CBSPD exams compare?
The CRCST exam fee is $140. It has 150 questions, a 3-hour limit, and in-person delivery at Prometric. HSPA controls authorization and scheduling. HSPA's current content outline is the right source for domain weights, and its handbook explains candidate rules. Actual, recalled, or leaked questions should never be used as study material.
- Scored125 questions
- Unscored pretest25 questions
Total150 questions
CBSPD currently lists a $135 CSPDT exam fee, with possible convenience fees. Its technician page currently describes 125 scored questions plus 25 unscored pretest questions, for 150 total, and a three-hour testing period. CBSPD publishes specific exam windows and deadlines rather than an always-open calendar. It also names the current testing arrangements in its bulletin. Verify all of those details for the window you plan to use.
A similar question count does not make the examinations identical. The issuers use their own job analyses, content outlines, terminology, candidate policies, scoring, and records. Study against the outline for the credential you actually intend to take. If you switch plans, rebuild your checklist instead of assuming every administrative or content detail transfers.

Do employers prefer CRCST or CSPDT?
Employer acceptance should be stated cautiously because it is not one nationwide rule. Some postings name CRCST, some name CSPDT, some accept either, and some describe certification without naming the issuer. Requirements may also differ by facility, health system, contract, location, or time allowed after hire. A credential's own marketing page cannot guarantee a particular employer's decision.
Use a small local sample instead of relying on anecdotes. Review current postings for the city and facilities you are targeting. Record the exact wording, whether certification is required or preferred, whether one issuer is named, and whether a deadline after hire appears. Then contact the employer for clarification when the wording is ambiguous. Save the answer with the posting date because hiring policies can change.
If you already work in healthcare, ask sterile processing leadership or human resources which credential the facility recognizes for your role and advancement path. Phrase the question neutrally: which active technician certifications satisfy this position's policy? That produces more useful evidence than asking which credential is better in the abstract.
For each posting
- Record the exact wording.
- Note whether certification is required or preferred.
- Note whether one issuer is named.
- Note whether a deadline after hire appears.
- Ask the employer when the wording is ambiguous.
- Save the employer's answer with the posting date.
- A posting may ask for
- CRCST
- CSPDT
- Either
- Certification with no issuer named
- Requirements may differ by
- Facility
- Health system
- Contract
- Location
- Time allowed after hire
How do renewal and certification length compare?
HSPA currently describes CRCST renewal as annual and lists continuing-education and fee requirements on its renewal page. Those requirements can evolve, and an active credential depends on meeting the rules for the relevant renewal period. Build a simple record of completion dates, providers, topics, and certificates instead of waiting until the final month.
CBSPD currently describes CSPDT certification as lasting five years and publishes recertification rules through its official materials. A longer cycle does not necessarily mean less work, and an annual cycle does not by itself make one credential stronger. Compare the total documentation, education, deadlines, and fees that apply to you across the full cycle.
Ask what happens after a missed deadline, what evidence is accepted, and how long record updates take. Use issuer portals and official support contacts for answers. Do not let a credential lapse because a third-party reminder went to spam or an employer kept the only copy of your education record.
Compare the whole cycle
Cycle length alone does not tell you which credential is less work or stronger. Compare the documentation, education, deadlines, and fees that apply to you.
How should you choose between CRCST and CSPDT?
Begin with the job market you can actually enter. List target employers and the credentials in their current postings. Next, compare your evidence against each issuer's current eligibility rules; the CRCST certification guide lists HSPA's steps. Then compare application timing, testing location, total fees, study outline, and renewal obligations. This turns a vague brand debate into a documented decision about fit.
Be cautious with programs that bundle training and certification into one phrase. Ask which certification exam is included, whether the exam fee is actually paid, which eligibility route the course satisfies, whether hands-on placement is guaranteed in writing, and what happens if a placement does not materialize. Verify every answer with the issuer.
Once you choose, study to that issuer's current outline and keep a second folder for administrative evidence. Preparation and eligibility are parallel tracks. Strong test study cannot repair missing documentation, and perfect paperwork cannot replace content knowledge. A clear checklist for both tracks is more valuable than trying to collect credentials without a role-specific reason.
Make a documented decision

Warning: Be cautious with bundled programs
Ask which exam a bundle includes, whether the exam fee is actually paid, which eligibility route it meets, whether placement is guaranteed in writing, and what happens if placement falls through. Then check each answer with the issuer.
CRCST vs. CBSPD questions
Are CRCST and CSPDT the same certification?
No. HSPA issues the CRCST credential, while CBSPD issues the CSPDT credential. Both relate to sterile processing technician work, but the organizations set different eligibility, application, testing, and renewal rules.
Which is better, CRCST or CSPDT?
There is no universal answer. Check the exact credential named in local job postings, ask target employers what they accept, and compare the current official rules with your experience and timeline. Do not rely on a school's claim that one credential is accepted everywhere.
How much are the CRCST and CSPDT exams?
The CRCST exam fee is $140. CBSPD currently lists a $135 CSPDT exam fee and warns that convenience fees may apply. Confirm both amounts and refund or rescheduling terms on the official sites before paying.
Do both exams have 150 questions and three hours?
The CRCST exam has 150 questions and a 3-hour time limit. CBSPD currently lists 150 total CSPDT questions and three hours. CBSPD controls its own exam details and can change them, so verify its current candidate bulletin before applying.
Will every employer accept either credential?
Do not assume that. Employer preferences, contract requirements, and local rules may differ. Read actual postings and ask the employer which active credential, if any, is required by the hire date or within an onboarding period.
