How often does CRCST certification need renewal?

HSPA currently describes CRCST certification as an annually renewed credential. Renewal is separate from the initial exam and the 400-hour experience requirement described in the CRCST certification guide. Earning full CRCST status does not make the credential permanent. Each certificant is responsible for meeting the current continuing education requirement, submitting the renewal, and paying the processing fee by the date assigned in HSPA's credential system.

Track your renewal year, not the calendar year

    Calendar-year tracking

  • Which CE counts

    Calendar-year tracking

    Your HSPA renewal record
Education in your renewal year, which can begin the date after your prior renewal activity

Use your individual renewal record rather than assuming every CRCST expires on December 31. HSPA explains that eligible education belongs to the certificant's renewal year, which can begin on the date after the prior renewal activity and can be affected by early or late renewal. That is why a spreadsheet organized only by calendar year may count an activity in the wrong period. Record the completion date and your current renewal window together.

Keep contact information current so renewal notices reach you, but do not depend on a reminder as the only control. Add private calendar checkpoints several months before expiration, review the live HSPA requirements, total accepted credits, and resolve missing certificates. Policies, fees, and submission interfaces can change. HSPA's current page and your account control; an older class handout or third-party checklist does not.

How many CE credits does CRCST renewal require?

HSPA currently requires 12 continuing education credits per year for CRCST. It states that the education must concern information and advancements relevant to sterile processing and be technical in nature. HSPA currently counts one hour as one CE credit, one-half hour as one-half credit, and one-quarter hour as one-quarter credit. Confirm that a provider's advertised units use the same measure before adding them to your total.

How HSPA currently counts CE time
  • One hourOne credit
  • One-half hourOne-half credit
  • One-quarter hourOne-quarter credit

Twelve credits is the CRCST requirement, not necessarily the total for a person who holds several HSPA credentials. HSPA publishes separate requirements for credentials such as CIS, CER, and CHL, sometimes tied to maintaining CRCST. Review the row for every active credential and avoid submitting one activity twice unless the current rules expressly permit it. A broad professional-development session may be useful without qualifying for technical CRCST credit.

Build a small buffer instead of stopping exactly at 12 advertised credits. A missing approval code, an activity outside the renewal window, an incomplete quiz, or a topic HSPA does not accept can reduce the usable total. A buffer is not permission to submit irrelevant material; it simply lowers the risk that one documentation issue makes the renewal late. Review the HSPA CE submission form before choosing activities.

Build a small buffer of relevant credits

Do not stop at exactly 12 advertised credits. A missing approval code or an activity outside the renewal window can reduce the usable total.

What counts as a CRCST CE credit?

HSPA currently lists several categories: lesson plans, webinars, and podcasts; conferences or seminars; qualifying technical courses; and other activities described on its CE submission materials. Each category has evidence rules. Conference certificates, for example, should identify the attendee, meeting date, topic, CE value, and HSPA approval code when required. A registration receipt alone may show payment without proving attendance or completion.

For college or community courses, HSPA currently describes technical coursework applicable to sterile processing or job performance and requests an official transcript with a completion date, title or topic, and a grade of C or better. Employer education may be valuable, but ask whether the activity has the required approval and documentation before counting it. Orientation hours and routine shift work are not automatically continuing education.

The safest workflow is verify, complete, save, and reconcile. Verify the current acceptance rule and approval information before starting. Complete every required attendance, quiz, or evaluation step. Save the certificate or transcript in a private credential folder. Reconcile the title, date, credit value, and renewal window in your tracker. Never alter a certificate or use another person's completion record.

Where can you find free CRCST CEUs?

Free sterile processing education can come from approved employer sessions, professional webinars, podcasts with a completion process, vendor education, public-health or standards programming, and occasional issuer resources. Free is a price, not an approval category. Before investing time, confirm the sponsor, learning objectives, technical relevance, available credit amount, approval code when required, completion method, and certificate fields against HSPA's current rules.

Be cautious with pages that promise unlimited instant CEUs, ask for sensitive identity documents before explaining the course, or display an expired approval code. Search for the sponsoring organization's own page and verify contact details. If a provider says an activity is HSPA approved, the certificate should still contain the information HSPA expects. Preserve the page or email that described the approval in case the provider later changes its listing.

A practical low-cost plan mixes sources across the year. Check internal hospital education, professional association offerings, approved conference recordings, and issuer-listed lesson options. Complete a small amount each month rather than trying to find 12 free hours just before expiration. If the acceptance of an activity is unclear, ask HSPA before relying on it; CRCST Academy does not approve CE providers or adjudicate credits.

Free education can come from

  • Professional webinars
  • Podcasts with a completion process
  • Vendor education
  • Public-health or standards programming
  • Occasional issuer resources

Warning: Red flags in a CEU offer

A promise of unlimited instant CEUs, a request for sensitive identity documents before the course is explained, or an expired approval code. Check the sponsor's own page and contact details.

How do you submit a CRCST renewal?

Start in HSPA's current renewal system and review the instructions associated with your credential. Confirm the renewal date, required credit total, eligible education window, contact information, and fee. Match every entered activity to supporting evidence before submitting. If HSPA offers both online and email pathways, use the one you can document reliably and follow any instructions about attaching certificates or retaining them for audit.

HSPA's current CRCST page lists a $50 certification-only renewal fee and $60 when optional membership is included. Membership and certification are different choices; paying for membership does not replace CE, and certification renewal does not require accepting unrelated offers. Verify the amount at checkout because current web information can change. Keep a receipt and confirmation without publishing account numbers or identity information.

After submitting, look for a success confirmation and updated credential record. If the system shows a balance, missing education, or unchanged expiration date, contact HSPA through its official channel. Do not submit repeated payments simply because a browser stalled. Preserve the timestamp, receipt, and error message, then ask how the transaction was recorded. A completed payment without accepted CE may still leave renewal unresolved.

Before and after you submit

  1. Confirm your personal renewal date and eligible CE window.

  2. Reconcile at least 12 acceptable CRCST credits with certificates.

  3. Verify the current fee and optional membership choice.

  4. Submit through HSPA's current process and save the confirmation.

  5. Check the updated official credential record after processing.

Warning: Do not pay again because a browser stalled

Keep the timestamp, receipt, and error message, and ask HSPA how the transaction was recorded.

How do you verify CRCST certification after renewal?

HSPA controls official CRCST status and provides credential records and verification resources. Its current renewal overview says certificants can print a letter of verification from the certification system. An employer should use HSPA's official evidence rather than a screenshot from a training company, a social profile, an exam-prep completion record, or a card whose expiration cannot be independently confirmed.

Allow for reasonable processing time, name variations, and record updates. If a renewed credential does not appear correctly, compare the confirmation, legal name, credential number, and expiration in the private HSPA account, then contact HSPA. Do not post those identifiers in a public comment. A verifier should also distinguish provisional status, full CRCST status, and an expired credential rather than treating every mention of CRCST as equivalent.

Maintain an audit-ready folder after renewal: the requirement page used for that cycle, CE certificates or transcript, submission summary, receipt, confirmation, and verification letter. Retain records according to HSPA and employer policy. Then begin the next renewal tracker with the correct start date. Small monthly maintenance is easier and more reliable than reconstructing a year of education from inbox searches.

CRCST renewal and CEU questions

How many CE credits are needed to renew CRCST?

HSPA currently requires 12 continuing education credits each year for CRCST renewal. The credits must be technical and relevant to sterile processing. Confirm the requirement for your renewal year in your HSPA account.

How often does CRCST certification renew?

HSPA currently describes CRCST renewal as annual. Your personal renewal date and renewal-year window control which education can be submitted, so do not rely on a generic calendar-year assumption.

Are free CRCST CEUs accepted?

Price does not determine acceptance. A free lesson, webinar, podcast, employer program, or conference session may qualify only when it meets HSPA's current topic, documentation, timing, and approval requirements.

How much does CRCST renewal cost?

HSPA's current CRCST renewal page lists $50 for certification renewal and $60 when optional membership is added. HSPA controls the fee, so verify the live amount before payment.

How can an employer verify CRCST certification?

Use HSPA's official verification resources or the letter of verification available through its current credential system. A course certificate, social badge, or CRCST Academy account is not official proof.
